Narrative

Films exist to create narratives. Narratives are powerful tools for the communication of ideas, the essence of how we all make sense of the world.

Story

Every film tells a story and every story is a journey. The audience embarks at the beginning, or setup, travels through a series of waypoints, each designed to build on what came before, and alights at the destination or resolution. The resolution explains the journey at an emotional level in a way that communicates and affirms the core message.

Genre

How the story is told is the most important decision a storyteller makes. Film offers a huge range of genres and techniques, only a few of which are appropriate for the story, the unique world it exists in and the resources available to the filmmaker. Finding the right form ensures the audience is engaged in the story and most inclined to consider the message.

Structure

The way in which the story is structured determines how successfully it engages the audience. Every film, even the shortest, needs a solid structure. Setting up the story properly, leading the audience through it and paying it off to their satisfaction ensures they embrace the message at an emotional level, the most essential ingredient of effective communication.

Tone

The tone of a film establishes the filmmaker's relationship with the audience and is determined by every constituent of it, from the spoken words to the manner of the contributors, the nature of the pictures, the music and the pace of the editing. Tone determines the feelings the story elicits in the audience and thus its emotional connection with the story.
